When is the best time to go Taroko Gorge?
The ideal time to visit Taroko Gorge is in the spring and autumn months when it offers mild weather and blooms in the flora of this natural mountainous area. With mild temperatures and flowers in bloom, spring (March to May) is great for hiking and seeing the sights. While autumn (September – November) sees cooler temperatures and colorful leaves as seen in the picture above, a pretty face nonetheless when walking around The Gorge.
Taroko Gorge can get really hot, humid and even stormy during Summer with occasional typhoon activity that drags in heavy rainfall combined with strong winds. December to February is winter and can be cold, especially at the higher elevations, but it provides a rare opportunity to visit when the gorge dusted with snow. Try traveling during spring or fall for the most pleasant climate and best outdoor adventure conditions.
Getting to Taroko Gorge
My gateway to the national park was in Hualien City, which is very easy to get to from most major cities in Taiwan. The easiest way to access Taroko Gorge is by train from Taipei to Hualien and a bus or a taxi to the park gate. Or you could rent a car and cruise the gorgeous Central Cross-Island Highway (make sure to stop at various viewpoints along the way).
Once inside the park, tourists can use a shuttle bus service to reach various spots in Taroko Gorge for visiting some of the attractions and hiking trails. Don’t forget to pick up a park entry permit at the visitor center before you set out, and adhere to the regulations of Taroko Gorge National Park in order to ensure that it’s protected for many generations to come.
